Sounds of Life held a historic event for Jamaican Hip Hop on Friday, May 20, 2011 on the lawns of Emancipation Park. Scores of rappers and producers convened for the Sound Culture University with a curious audience filled with fans, DJ's, academics, journalists and skeptics alike. The discussion revealed to everyone that local Hip Hop is in its early stages and is still defining itself. The vision is for it to bring Hip Hop full circle and rekindle the global genre and culture with its Jamaican roots and its essence - as stated by one local rapper, "to speak truth to power". Many issues and challenges within Hip Hop were discussed, particularly in a local context. For the first, many 'outsiders' to the movement could get a better understanding of not only the genre in general but more specifically its local manifestation.

This was the first event of its kind for local Hip Hop. It was said by one rapper that the community has never had such a forum to discuss its music. The audience heard much about the experiences and perspectives of local Hip Hop artistes. It is of importance to note that Dr. Sonjah Stanley Niah said that the various Hip Hop practitioners seated before her will be right in touch with what the new musical genre to evolve out of Jamaica will be. 

Many people stuck around for more discussion after the event, especially rappers who have begun to plot more cooperation in building the local Hip Hop scene and propelling the music both locally and internationally.  The energy was great for all Hip Hoppers. And Sounds of Life must be thanked. This was a great opportunity and will be the catalyst for much more in the future. Hailing originally from Spanish Town, the first capitol of the island paradise Jamaica,  Jason ‘Sly’ Rankin, developed his childhood love for music into a budding career, which started when he and a group of high school friends banded together to form Gangsta Colony in 2002.

SLY RANKIN fuses the sounds of Jamaica's reggae and dancehall with the hip-hop and pop sounds of the United States. He draws inspiration from the colorful surroundings, experiences, and observations found in his homeland of Jamaica, his numerous trips to his adopted home Brooklyn, NY where his record label is based and his time spent in Florida with his family and friends. This is enough to give his music a uniquely refreshing sound.  While his content stays true to reality, he finds the need to maintain positivity in his lyrics; “Negativity is a reality that we must reflect, but I feel that the negativity we see and experience in our societies can be portrayed from a positive perspective, not necessarily a perspective that will PROMOTE it.”

Sly Rankin completed his bachelor’s degree in literature and philosophy at the University of the West Indies, while traveling back and forth between Jamaica and New York City to prepare material for his debut album. Solja Life Records recently released a music video for "Wasn't There", the first single from Sly Rankin's debut album titled "Jamaican Pride" which has been rotating on Jamaica’s leading music video stations. He has been performing at shows from New York to New Hampshire, and collaborating with several artists. He has also been featured on numerous episodes of Jamaica’s R.E.TV rap exposure program Face-Off, all of which can be found at youtube.com/SoljaLife.   The upcoming album “Jamaican Pride” features six songs licensed by MTV Networks for use in their programming and video games.

TSD Live @ Up On The Roof 05/26/07

This is a classic moment in Jamaican Hip Hop history! Early in 2007, a number of local Hip Hop acts began making their mark at venues across Kingston such as Up on the Roof and Village Cafe.
