Whoever said that live hip-hop music was dead in the land of reggae needed to have been present at the premises of Bookophilia on Hope Road on the night of September 10 to witness some of the illest MCs on the Rock in action at Manifesto|Jamaica’s third and final instalment of the ART’ical Exposure series, aptly titled “Rhyme & Reason”.
Hosted by Shaq The MC, the line-up featured Five Steez, Kabaka Pyramid, Kariuki, Sly Rankine, K. John, Shermon Dadz, The Sickest Drama (TSD), Jouina Skyy, Jah Balance, Triple Threat and Skantana. The night air was filled a hypnotic mix of beats and flows, with the cosy crowd soaking up the vibe. The end of Kariuki’s set found him in a pensive mood, sitting on a stool with his head slightly bent, dropping bars ladened with personal truths. The Sickest Drama (TSD) rocked the spot, no doubt, and was soon joined by the rapid spitting Jouina Skyy. The two traded verses to good effect and were well received by the crowd.
Five Steez exuded the realest vibe and put it all on the line with Rebel Music. Many of the acts acquitted themselves well on the night and proved that hip-hop is still alive and well on the live music circuit.
