KINGSTON, JAMAICA – Rising Hip Hop artiste, Five Steez, and New York City radio icon, DJ Ready Cee, have released the highly anticipated ‘Momentum: Volume Two’ mixtape for free download and streaming at http://www.djreadycee.com & iTunes. ‘Volume One’ in the three-part series, released December 2010, clocked tens of thousands of downloads within months of its release.

“I took it back to the ‘golden era’ with the choice of instrumentals on the last one and now we’ve moved up in time. It’s the same concept but the energy is crazier plus there are new flows and new styles. I had to top the first one with this. That’s the whole idea of building momentum,” says the young Kingston-based rapper.

Despite widespread local and international awareness of an emerging Hip Hop scene in the land of Reggae, Five Steez has captured the attention of numerous tastemakers in Hip Hop including the legendary DJ Ready Cee.

“I’m telling you, whoever felt Volume One is gonna love Volume Two. It’s exactly the same vibe and sounds like a perfect continuation. I know it took a long while but I just had to wait for the right time,” says DJ Ready Cee.

Five Steez is one of Jamaica’s leading Hip Hop artistes gaining recognition on and off the island. He is currently working on his debut album entitled ‘War for Peace’, which will be released in 2012.

The 2nd installment of Manifesto|Jamaica's fundraising series ART'ical Exposure is this Saturday, August 27, 2011 at The Bob Marley Museum. The event, which is now held monthly, will be held under the theme 'FuZion'. Gates open at 6PM.

'FuZion' will highlight some of the rising poetic voices in Jamaica as well as an eclectic mix of musical artists, fusing Hip Hop, Reggae, R&B & Alternative into one exciting show.

Shaq the MC, Five Steez and Kabaka Pyramid are among some of the featured performers scheduled for the night. Also on the bill are Sezi, Deewunn & Phoenixx. Poets, Abbebe Payne, Simone C. Simpson & Radha Ruiz are to appear as well. Showtime will begin at 7PM.

Admission will be a mere $300. Proceeds go towards Manifesto|Jamaica's community projects & Festival of ART'ical Empowerment to educate, expose and empower the youth through art & culture. Patrons are also encouraged to donate additional cash or books to the organization's book drive to encourage more reading and writing among the nation's youth.

Sounds of Life held a historic event for Jamaican Hip Hop on Friday, May 20, 2011 on the lawns of Emancipation Park. Scores of rappers and producers convened for the Sound Culture University with a curious audience filled with fans, DJ's, academics, journalists and skeptics alike. The discussion revealed to everyone that local Hip Hop is in its early stages and is still defining itself. The vision is for it to bring Hip Hop full circle and rekindle the global genre and culture with its Jamaican roots and its essence - as stated by one local rapper, "to speak truth to power". Many issues and challenges within Hip Hop were discussed, particularly in a local context. For the first, many 'outsiders' to the movement could get a better understanding of not only the genre in general but more specifically its local manifestation.

This was the first event of its kind for local Hip Hop. It was said by one rapper that the community has never had such a forum to discuss its music. The audience heard much about the experiences and perspectives of local Hip Hop artistes. It is of importance to note that Dr. Sonjah Stanley Niah said that the various Hip Hop practitioners seated before her will be right in touch with what the new musical genre to evolve out of Jamaica will be.

Many people stuck around for more discussion after the event, especially rappers who have begun to plot more cooperation in building the local Hip Hop scene and propelling the music both locally and internationally. The energy was great for all Hip Hoppers. And Sounds of Life must be thanked. This was a great opportunity and will be the catalyst for much more in the future. A thorough summary of the discussion is forthcoming and will be posted right here on this blog.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA – In 1967, Jamaican-born DJ Kool Herc took the local sound system culture to the Bronx, New York and subsequently, Hip Hop was born. Four decades later, the genre has come full circle as Five Steez, one of Jamaica’s Hip Hop MCs, has collaborated with DJ Ready Cee, a New York underground Hip Hop radio icon from the Bronx, and released a mixtape online entitled ‘Momentum: Volume One’.

The mixtape, which is the first release in a three-part series, features 19 tracks, spanning a total of 46 minutes, in which Five Steez spits his lyrics over well-known ‘old school’ instrumentals as DJ Ready Cee mixes, scratches and cuts. The free mixtape is available for stream and download at www.djreadycee.com and www.facebook.com/fivesteez .

“It’s been a while since I’ve heard a real mixtape with actual mixing, plus scratching, and I wanted to bring that back,” says Five Steez. “It’s become rare even within modern Hip Hop but this is what the mixtape is really about.”

DJ Ready Cee, known for The Underground Lockdown and The Ready Cee Show on New York City’s WHUT 91.9FM during the late 1990s and early 2000s, says, “I first heard the homie Five Steez when he sent me a track that I played on my online show. I was blown away and so were my co-hosts and listeners because it was so dope. And this kid is coming straight out of Kingston, Jamaica, so that was special.”

Five Steez says, “Ready Cee is a legend so it’s definitely an honour to get this type of support from him, particularly with the mixtape. I hope that this will highlight turntablism locally and also build my fanbase, especially abroad where the real market for Hip Hop exists.”

Five Steez is one of the most recognized artistes within Kingston’s growing Hip Hop movement and is best known for his appearance in the music video, ‘Get Down’, and recent performances at Manifesto|Jamaica events, ART’ical Exposure and ART’ical Empowerment Live. My Xpreshun is the very first solo project completed by Five Steez. Disillusioned with the decline in the quality of music and fresh from an unofficial disbanding of The BP Army - an elite group of which he was a part - Steez decided to focus his energy on his own music. Noting the lack of sincerity in contemporary Hip Hop and chronicling his own personal transformation, he created one of the most honest and introspective albums one could encounter, hence the title of the project. He made My Xpreshun for himself, giving little consideration to the listeners' expectations. On March 28, 2008, he released the project independently, distributing it primarily via the Internet, and received critical acclaim from the Jamaican Hip Hop scene.

Hailing originally from Spanish Town, the first capitol of the island paradise Jamaica, Jason ‘Sly’ Rankin, developed his childhood love for music into a budding career, which started when he and a group of high school friends banded together to form Gangsta Colony in 2002.

SLY RANKIN fuses the sounds of Jamaica's reggae and dancehall with the hip-hop and pop sounds of the United States. He draws inspiration from the colorful surroundings, experiences, and observations found in his homeland of Jamaica, his numerous trips to his adopted home Brooklyn, NY where his record label is based and his time spent in Florida with his family and friends. This is enough to give his music a uniquely refreshing sound. While his content stays true to reality, he finds the need to maintain positivity in his lyrics; “Negativity is a reality that we must reflect, but I feel that the negativity we see and experience in our societies can be portrayed from a positive perspective, not necessarily a perspective that will PROMOTE it.”

Sly Rankin completed his bachelor’s degree in literature and philosophy at the University of the West Indies, while traveling back and forth between Jamaica and New York City to prepare material for his debut album. Solja Life Records recently released a music video for "Wasn't There", the first single from Sly Rankin's debut album titled "Jamaican Pride" which has been rotating on Jamaica’s leading music video stations. He has been performing at shows from New York to New Hampshire, and collaborating with several artists. Whoever said that live hip-hop music was dead in the land of reggae needed to have been present at the premises of Bookophilia on Hope Road on the night of September 10 to witness some of the illest MCs on the Rock in action at Manifesto|Jamaica’s third and final instalment of the ART’ical Exposure series, aptly titled “Rhyme & Reason”.

The night air was filled a hypnotic mix of beats and flows, with the cosy crowd soaking up the vibe. The end of Kariuki’s set found him in a pensive mood, sitting on a stool with his head slightly bent, dropping bars ladened with personal truths. The Sickest Drama (TSD) rocked the spot, no doubt, and was soon joined by the rapid spitting Jouina Skyy. The two traded verses to good effect and were well received by the crowd.

Five Steez exuded the realest vibe and put it all on the line with Rebel Music. Many of the acts acquitted themselves well on the night and proved that hip-hop is still alive and well on the live music circuit.
